_Workshop Day1:

Workshop started out with an incredible amount of people. Both students and architects seemed very interested of this event, which of course made the whole pre-event time worth its while. The day started off with the three of us (Tudor Cosmatu, Andrei Raducanu and Irina Bogdan) and our dear friend Alexander Kalachev giving a short introductory lecture on parametric design and fabrication methodes and talking about our thesis projects approaches. A short introduction into Rhino followed, allowing (most of the people) to get a glance on what this software is able to do. Grasshopper introduction and tutored examples followed. This proved to be the hardest part, but we definitely believe everyone got the point and can start discovering the potential of it further.

_Workshop Day2:

More tutored examples followed during the whole day, increasing the number of bedazzled people. Things started to get messy towards noon, but in the end everyone got the point, which was a great deed. We went through a series of examples ranging from object to potential urban plan scenario.

_Workshop Day3:

Following our previous presentations we decided to let the people start to discover the software on their own. They had to work in teams of 5 and they were given the task to develop a system (knowing that they will have to deal with – flat sheets of 6mm cardboard) which had to have a chosen function (although this was not our biggest interest, given the workshop scope). Alex Cristal from our new best friends SPOT DESIGN came to join us and brought with him one of his babies (a 600x450mm laser cutter). Our intent for this day was that people were supposed to see how such a machine works and how the process of sending files to factory has to be dealt with. People started regaining interest and enthusiasm and worked hard on getting things done. Later that night we met Bence Pap and Andrei Gheorghe and went out for a beer in order to discuss details regarding the following days.

_Workshop Day4:

Bence and Andrei delighted the participants and us with a presentation about previous workshops and projects of their own. Madalina Dumitru marketing director of RUUKKI for Romania and Bulgaria (our platinum sponsor – which believed in the success of the workshop and gave us the chance to make it happen) gave a short presentation about some of their latest works and softwares and explained why RUUKKI is interested in the participants work. The whole day past pretty fast and towards the evening we had the participants present their 2 days developed proposals. We were very excited about the results. Unfortunately (given the remaining time) we asked them to vote for one project each, so that in the end we can build at least one. After a long discussion between ourselves (tutors) we decided we might have time to built 3 projects fitting in 3 different types of approaches – emergence, sculptural endeavor and component based pavilion. The finalists were named: VIRULENCE, WISHBONE and hex[igloo. Immediately teams merged and prepared for the final run.

_Workshop Day5:

People started working early in the morning, merging concepts, ideas and methods in order to make everything work correctly. The team of tutors went through all the projects trying to make each and every one of them work. Late that night the VIRULENCE project got sent to the laser cutter, while the Wishbone and hex[igloo were still struggling to prepare the files for laser cutting.

_Workshop Day6:

While the VIRULENCE people were waiting for final pieces and starting the assembly on site the other teams were struggling to make the files for production as intelligent as possible. Thanks to our good friend (dj/vj) Cristi aka CRID we had the chance to stay up because of his nice speakers and amplifier. Soon the university square was covered in the furious beats of cristi’s playlist.

_Wokshop Day7:

After a long night for the laser cutter and for Alex (SPOT DESIGN), most of the WISHBONE pieces were done and more than half of the hex[igloo components arrived. Soon a very interesting configuration emerged: some of the people were involved in putting the pieces together on site, while the so called FACTORY was working hard on putting the components together. Half of our tutoring staff had to leave, so a quick ceremony took place where participants received their participation certificate. Days and nights started to merge and to become one (a thing we really enjoyed). The beats started pounding and increasing the workflow, the best song proving to be nympho – borgore ;.) also because the pieces were not that wide, so you can stick your hand inside. Cardboard fisting, while holding a glue gun in your hand, was a specialty only a few could perform our specialists being Cristi, Irina and Ina. The Wishbone got finished towards the end of the night.

_Workshop Day8:

To our surprise a lot of people (all of them) showed up for the final run in assembling the final pieces of the hex[igloo. Although our estimation was to finish towards 6 pm it proved to be rather wrong. Towards the end of the night the hex[igloo started to force itself into place waiting for the final rows to come into place . The work and fun continued until late in the morning. Glue guns started running out of bullets, jamming and giving up on the tough job they had to perform, tapes were being reused and people were tired. 6pm (our previous deadline) quickly became 6 am, but with the enthusiasm and interest of the whole group, the hex[igloo got finished as the sun was rising, allowing our final guest (Alex) to get to his flight on time. As a final conclusion we have to say that we (as tutors/organizers of this event) are extremely proud of the results and the way people worked together. Although we placed the mockups without any permission in the main universities hallway, we are happy that everyone was glad to see the results.

What will happen next is making the event and results public by taking the models on the streets, during the STREET DELIVERY festival which will take place from 10^th june till 12^th june, and to the Architectural Annual 7^th july till 17^th july 2011.

Post - No Man's Land

How it all began:

The Post-No Man’s Land project is a personal study that followed up after the No Man’s Land workshop that took place in the spring of 2010 [Nicosia, Cyprus]. The theme was to come up with ideas for rehabilitating the fenced city of Famagusta, found on the Green line between the Greek and the Turkish side of Cyprus.

In this synopsis you can find out how the project evolved and how the fabrication process went along. I've also pointed out some of the goods and bads that showed up during the whole process.

Advanced Digital Design and Fabrication WS: 03rd-9th of May 2010

Immediately after the GH Training I was more than glad to participate at another event: The Advanced Digital Design and Fabrication Workshop, coordinated by the Hyperbody Research Group, TU Delft in collaboration with UAUIM, Bucharest.

The aim of the workshop was to design and build a 1:1 scale pavilion on the terrace of the university[UAUIM]. The software used in the process were Rhinoceros + Grasshopper.

The program looked like this:

I have to admit it was a really intense working week.
With the help of Han Feng and Ran Berman we managed to finish the design of the pavilion during the first 7 days.

It’s was still not 100% finished at this stage but it’s a good glimpse over the whole structure in order for the sponsors to see what we are tackling with.

The fabrication process began during the following week. As material we used MDF sheets. They were partly milled by using a CNC machine[for the vertical beams], partly laser cut for the skin. Thankfully Atelier 13 sponsored us again and helped by laser cutting 60 skin elements. For the base structure we used an electric saw to cut the wooden beams.

After the design and the fabrication processes ended, the build-up started: painting components, waiting for them to dry, calculating and positioning the base elements, finishing positioning all the floor tiles, screwing the beam parts together, putting the beams in place and finally placing the skin scales onto the beams.

No Man's Land Project

At the beginning of this week one very challenging task came up to an end: the No Man's Land Project.

This competition-workshop started on the 22nd of March and ended on the 12th of April, after 3 hard core working weeks. It took place in Nicosia, Cyprus and it dealt with a very sensible, interesting case: the abandoned city of Famagusta.

It turned out to be an extraordinary experience. The people that took part at this event kicked ass big time...to say the least :) The participants were from all over: AA[Architectural Association, London], DELFT University of Technology[The ? Factory Group], NTUA[National Technical Universisty of Athens], DIA[Dessau Institute of Architecture] and last but not least, we have to mention our great team mates from UCY[University of Cyprus].

In order to make a short description i will paste here some of the brief's paragraphs:

How can one practice parametrics when no parameters are to be found, when no variables can be set? How can one deal with absence or predict the upcoming presence? Which rehabilitation plans can be implemented for an abandoned city whose residents want to return to their original households and built environment?

Existing Situation

Every four or five years since 1974 the issue of opening the abandoned and fenced city, that lies inside the Green line in Cyprus, is brought forward. This sparks on the island a recurring, yet fruitless, discussion with government and state institutions on one side and the refugees, individually or collectively, on the other. The discussion is based on the argument whether the city should be returned right away in its current condition to its inhabitants or it should be kept fenced for some years more in order to be restored and rebuild, since after 35 years of abandonment virtually all its infrastructure, if not the whole built environment, is not reusable and beyond repair.

Engineers consider it an ideal chance to re‐build a whole city with “proper” urban planning and infrastructure that any other thriving city wouldn’t allow. Unlike the case of Brasilia, the fact of an empty city that its inhabitants are relocated merely a few kilometers away creates an unprecedented opportunity to create an innovative urban space for an already existing and longing to return population.

The rightful inhabitants on the other side, who have been waiting for decades to return, bring forth the argument that they want to return to the same city they left (in an instant moment) and not to a new, maybe “improved”, but non‐familiar city. Their right to return is safeguarded by their right to property.

This workshop is based on the hypothetical event of the return of the abandoned and fenced for 35 years city of Famagusta to its former inhabitants.

This is the studio work made during the summer semester of 2009 at [DIA].

The aim was to design the masterplan for the 2012 Olympic Games that will take place in London.
The used softwares behind the whole project were mainly Rhino and Grasshopper[the very juicy "right hand" plug-in for Rhino that makes the little fella turn parametric]. We have also tackled with Processing to generate swarming paths and cluster patterns.

And now to point out what CANactions is really about:

CANactions – is an annual conference and exhibition of architectural visions and ideas targeted at young architects and architectural students. The first conference was held in March 2008 as continuation of the Wonderland.ua series.

The main idea of CANactions is to establish a new sense of an Ukrainian Architectural community and seed the
understanding and appreciation of contemporary architecture in the Ukraine.

The main target group are young professionals and architectural students, but the festival is open to the public and located in heart of Kiev. Hence many members of the general public, politicians and investors have the opportunity to see fresh architectural ideas.

Topic of CANactions 2009 is – emerging design tools across generations.

This years CANaction is examining the actions and connections between different generations of architects and their relationship to emerging tools. The leap will be made over almost 4 generations of architects culminating in a symposium for the next generation of upcoming Ukrainian architects.

As a connection between the different generations of architects we are investigating the influence of architectural schools
and mass media, emerging tools and external consultants.

The connection between international operating universities such as DIA in Dessau and the mass media is probably the
most striking. The universities pass over the knowledge and sometimes develop new tools.

But in what way do external consultants such as environmental engineers, structural engineers and landscape architects pass over a certain amount of common knowledge and tools. It is these connections and dialogues to leading external professionals such as AKT, Bollinger+Grohmann, Topotek1 and Transsolar that will be examined and exposed. Due to the internet emerging tools and publications from universities are spread with a high speed worldwide but external specialists are clustered mainly in London and the south of Germany.

How does such lack of consultancy influence architectural practice in the Ukraine and what does it mean for the
development of the next generation of architects?

This is how the Studio X warm out project turned out.

It is actually a pavilion i thought of proposing for the TRANSMEDIALE 09 festival that takes place every year in Berlin.

transmediale is one of the leading festivals for art and digital culture internationally. On a yearly basis it presents advanced artistic positions reflecting on the socio-cultural impact of new technologies. Its program includes a conference, an exhibition, live performances, film and video programs and a variety of fringe events throughout Berlin.

With the festival theme DEEP NORTH transmediale.09 focusses on the global artistic, cultural, societal and philosophical consequences that the presumed imminent collapse of the polar ice barrier may trigger. Are we about to reach another historically succinct moment of no return leaving in its wake uncontrollable global transformations? Does climate change elicit cultural change, a shifting of extremes or a collapse in established, systemic and network norms?

To find out an answer to some of these issues i focused on networks and their evolution in time taking in account the factors/forces that enable them to modify. I have looked upon factors that actually determine the dynamics of networks and i have chosen a few basic concepts:

action/reaction concentration/dilution attractive forces/repulsive forces

Starting from these basic concepts i have began my study by questioning and modifying these rules as a parallel to the on going global changes that are affecting, changing and distorting our historical reference points and our points of view.

Using Processing, a JAVA based software, i created a honeycomb mesh.
Step two was to apply attractive and repulsive forces on this mash. This generated a number of different force field diagrams.
After analysing them i have compared the results and chosen a general pattern and then i created this last force field diagram that i used in planning my pavilion.

To express the times we are experiencing right now, the changes of perception, detaching from former customs, reiterating habits, basically reediting our points of view and creating new reference points, i have cut the mesh in different points in order to see the result. The new stitches are yet to be developed if needed. If not then these newly developed "cutouts" shall evolve and live as new organism. These new organisms shall probably function under new rules and they shall create their own system of existence.

I basically shaped the 3D model of this network by applying the spatial distorting forces on the z axis.

The only left out factor right now is the physical interaction between the network and the human being. To be able to interract and addapt to any given scenario i have thought of creating this honeycomb 3D mash/network out of polycarbonate and circuits of optical fibre. If needed, a photosensitive surface can be attached to the 3D network and along with the optical fiber connection, patterns shall be generated on the surface of the canopy.

WebHotel

The WebHotel is a hybrid building, constructed between the physical and the virtual world. Its facade is built using a metal structure and fabric with graphics in an urban space. Its rooms are built out of virtual objects and with lines of code on the Internet. When a person enters a virtual room, he can manipulate its walls and the objects it contains.

Its virtual presence is manifested in the physical world by means of lights and sounds that are superposed onto its thin skin. In this way, for the first time a facade manifests an occurrence that rather than taking place behind it in a nearby environment is the product of actions in different places in the world. A webcam trained on the building sends real-time images to the Internet so that the user of the room can view the effects of his action. The actual building, with a server inside, produces its physical and its virtual images simultaneously.

A blue eyed kid walked up to Theodor and gave him this puzzeling inscription:

All the mixed up images confused Theo but he chose not to throw away the little piece of paper and put it in his pocket. That very evening, exhausted by the never ending list of phone calls, by the tasks and a list of deadlines that seemed to be longer than all the Pacific coasts put together, he took a deep breath, turned off his laptop and laid back in his chair quietly. His mind was running like a wilderbeest. He closed his eyes.

He pictured himself entering the park he walked by every day, a park he never entered during the last 20 years working as a broker.

On one of the main alleys Theo couldn't help observe a weird looking construction that people didn't even seem to avoid, to mind or even see...people were walking straight through it, anonymously.

Theo stopped this time and stared...he stared for minutes in a row and couldn't understand how it was possible for such a thing to be built over night.He couldn't remember walking by it. He was standing there with his mouth opened and wondering eyes.

He saw a small sheet of paper on which it was written:

He went towards that announcement. Before reaching the entrance a young lady came up to him holding up a piece of paper:

She was exuberant, with a playful,vivid look on her face. She was telling stories about the world without saying a word. Quite disturbing.

Theo grabbed the ticket and went in.

Suddenly the whole space burst into color. It was raining with drops of paint...Disney style. A true odyssey. Music, life, vibrations, people smiling and children laughing. The scent of fresh fruit in the air!

Theo opened his eyes wide like a squeezed fish, all sweaty and disturbed. The memory of that blue eyed kid he had met earlier that morning was haunting him like a lioness. He remembered about the piece of paper he had in his pocket. He ran to his jacket, pulled out that ticket, torn it apart and thrown it away.

Brokers don't do colour.
